Tom, do you think striving to make your books more connected for the shared universe can be detrimental? I've seen nothing but complaints about the X books since the "shared" events started happening, but also you guys keep doing stuff like Hawkeye, Black Widow, Silver Surfer, and All-New Ghost Rider which are all highly praised, but almost completely separate from the rest of the Marvel U. — sent by Anonymous

Here’s the thing, though: the books that are all the most connected also tend to be the ones that sell the best. There are definitely readers, and they tend to be readers who’ve been around for awhile, who prefer titles that sort of do their own thing and exist by themselves off in a corner. But the majority of the readership is looking for an inter-connected Marvel Universe.Just look at the kinds of questions that are often asked here about how X connects to Y as an example. Anything can be detrimental if done poorly, but I don’t think the solution here is to untether everything from everything else. We do some of one, we do some of the other. And this way, there’s a little something for everybody. But on the average month, an issue of X-MEN probably sells as well as BLACK WIDOW, SILVER SURFER, and GHOST RIDER combined. (But not HAWKEYE, because an issue of HAWKEYE didn’t come out that month…)

Oh that Hawkeye joke was funny
